Sake Background
Sake is a Japanese word meaning "alcoholic beverage." In English, the word has come to refer to a specific alcoholic beverage brewed mainly from rice, and known in Japan as nihonshu.
Sake is widely referred to in English as "rice wine." However, this designation is not entirely accurate: its production method has more in common with beer than wine.
A tokkuri is a sake flask or pitcher. Heated sake is often warmed by placing the sake-filled tokkuri in a pan of hot water. The small cups used for drinking sake are called ochoko.
